Rochester Hills Unveils New Centennial Ceramic Mural in Spencer Park!

Rochester Hills, MI - July 12, 2022 - On Tuesday, July 12th, Rochester Hills Mayor, Bryan Barnett, unveiled a long anticipated ceramic tile mural in Thelma Spencer Park. This mural celebrates the centennial year that Rochester Hills opened its parks. This art project, which was funded by the Michigan Council for the Arts and Community Affairs, brought together over 350 community members to craft ceramic tiles depicting their love of community parks.

Thanks to project partners, the Paint Creek Center for the Arts, the Older Persons’ Commission (OPC), and Paint a Miracle, Rochester Hills was able to host multiple workshops so people of all ages and abilities could contribute to this outdoor mosaic.

The main mural artist is Michelle Sider. Michelle is a Michigan-based mixed media artist, her works draw from a globally-informed and thoughtful perspective. Sider was inspired to make glass mosaics after viewing them at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and on travels abroad to Italy and Israel.

Michelle shared, "I love the premise of the Centennial Ceramic Mural project which was to provide an opportunity for residents of varying abilities to participate in creating a ceramic mural. Each tile is hand carved by a member of the community and has a unique look yet the mural as a whole has a cohesive and uplifting image that enhances the park and celebrates the Centennial year of the opening of the parks in Rochester Hills. I chose a sunburst because it is an uplifting image to celebrate the community coming together for this project. It was an honor to design and assemble this mural for the city."
