Extra Day of School Added for Five RCS Schools!

Dear RCS Community,

Rochester Community Schools has exceeded the allotted number of forgiven school days for Brewster, Brooklands, Hampton, and Adams High School, along with the Special Education Adult Transition Programs and Services (ATPS) located at the Dr. John M. Schultz Educational Campus.

School districts are allowed up to six days of forgiveness by the State of Michigan. The district submitted a waiver request for the five locations that exceeded six days due to power outages in September 2022, along with other inclement weather days throughout the year.

At this time, the waiver has been denied. Therefore, we are required to add an additional instructional day to our 2022-23 academic calendar for these five schools.

Brewster, Brooklands, Hampton, Adams, and ATPS are now scheduled for a full day of school on Friday, May 19.

Adams High School students attending the Oakland Schools Technical Campuses (OSTC) will be able to attend OSTC as usual on this day. Van Hoosen students who travel to Adams High School during the day do not need to report on May 19. Adams High School students who travel to other RCS buildings during the day will report to the media center at AHS during those hours. School-Age Care (SAC) will be available to provide support at the three elementary locations that are in session. Normal transportation services and food service will occur on this additional day as well.

There will be no school for all other RCS students on May 19; staff professional development will continue as scheduled at all other locations.

Many districts throughout Michigan had waivers denied this year. While we are aware of pending litigation attempting to reverse the denials, we believe we must plan ahead as if the denial will remain in place. If additional cancellations occur that impact the calendar, we will communicate those as appropriate.

We appreciate your support.

Sincerely,

Debi Fragomeni, Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning
